Per Gunnar Tverbakk: Space for Interference
Research Fellow at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Faculty of Visual Arts
The project “Space for Interference” functions as an umbrella for three individual art projects. The three artists Matias Faldbakken, Marianne Heier and Tverbakk himself will each execute a separate project. In addition, Tverbakk will serve as curator and producer. This dual role will be explored and discussed as part of the study.

All three art projects are interventions that take place outside the spaces of the traditional art institution. Each artist will work in relation to a chosen site, but in this context the “sites” are not physical, definable places but rather existing institutions and systems and their fields of operation. Our understanding of the term “site” and the ways we use it in site-specific art have changed considerably in the period from the 1960s through to today. Tverbakk takes as his point of departure Miwon Kwon’s notion of the “discursive site”, described in her book One Place After Another: Site-specific art and locational identity, MIT Press, 2002, in which she introduces three paradigms for site-specific art, characterised as phenomenological, social/institutional and discursive.
Tverbakk’s aim is to use the art projects of “Space for Interference” as basis for an investigation into the methods of intervention and forms of address artists use when they choose to impinge on specific fields of operation.
