Fellow Patrik Entian opens “Looking for Painting” exhibition at Rom8 on 3 September 2011

The exhibition “Looking for Painting / Att synliggöra det synliga” is the artistic result of Patrik Entian’s three-year research project at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts. The project is an exploration of visual environments through painting. The exhibition opens at the Rom8 gallery in Bergen on 3 September 2011.

Real Deal (detail)

“I started by collecting, reworking and trying out pictures from my computer in paintings,” says Entian. “The work has developed gradually through a discussion about how painting can serve as a method for exploring the visual word as we experience it today. This exploration is based on painting as a practice and on day-to-day work in the studio.”
Antarctic webcam
Alongside these investigations the project has centred on a series of paintings based on images from a webcam at a German research base in the Antarctic. The screen shows a picture of the horizon in a desolate, icy landscape and is updated every 10 minutes via the internet. The webcam pictures have resulted in a series of paintings.
“I record the fleeting webcam images before they disappear for good, and this also serves as documentation of the painting process,” Entian explains. “Here the painting becomes a method for collecting and organising.”
Exhibition dates and venue
Rom8 is showing the exhibition in the period 4–18 September 2011. The Rom8 gallery is on the ground floor at Vaskerelven 8 in Bergen.
In addition to the exhibition at Rom8, much of the material and documentation used in the process will go on display on the 5th floor at the Dept of Fine Art at C. Sundsgate 53.
Patrik Entian and his main tutor Jon Arne Mogstad are both associated with the Dept of Fine Art.
